Ellen's mother, May, was one of the great inspirations of my life. She taught me (AND Ellen) that just
because you had never done a certain thing, or had never been allowed to do something that you
felt you could do well, that was no reason to demure. " Do it", she said. "I'll help if you need it.."
Ellen was not a full grown adult when I met her mother, but I envied a young life so influenced and supported
by May Newby and I knew -- as did Maybelle -- that Ellen was going to be an amazing grown up. When I
met Ellen again, as a working counselor in a University setting, I could see every bit of her mother's strength
and positivity with another layer of kindness added. Ellen will be remembered by all as an exceptional
person, extraordinary really, part of an unusally gifted family. She was taught to make the world better and
I beieve she did that every day of her life.
