Obituary for John J. "Big John" Everest

John Everest, age 87 of Springfield, Mo, left this world peacefully at 9:00 am on Sunday, December 31, 2017 at his home surrounded by his loving family.
Born on August 25, 1930 in Toledo, Oregon, he was the son of the late David M. Everest. He served in the United States Coast Guard.
After a career as a Professional Truck Driver, John and his late wife Mary Elizabeth, whom he married May 13, 1949 in Toledo, Oregon, owned and operated Ozark Fence Company in Springfield until 1995 when they sold it to their son Jim. John stayed on as part-time “Senior Advisor” until his illness prevented him from going to the office.
John was saved as a young man and baptized at Bellview Baptist Church, beginning his deep church involvement where he served as Sunday School Superintendent, Trustee, Treasurer and Bus Driver. In recent years, he and Elizabeth were members of High Street Baptist Church where they were active in the Companion Class.
His favorite activities revolved around his family and included boating and fishing at the family lake house on Table Rock Lake. He particularly enjoyed piloting his pontoon boat, taking the family and friends for excursions and refreshment runs. As a young man, he was a powerful bowler, known for an explosive result when he delivered the ball. John will always be remembered for his devotion to his family and faith, sense of humor and tremendous handshake.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 64 years, Elizabeth, his father, two brothers and four sisters.
Survivors include one daughter, Nancy Everest-Glor (Mike), three sons, Steve (Clovia), Jim (Donna), Springfield, Mo and David (Cathy), Prairie Village, KS; grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Jeffrey, John (Kim), Adrien (Arthur), Joe (Taylor), Brent, Rachel, Sarah, Joshua, Pam, Macie, Abbey, Abner, Alliette, Paden (Jamie), Caleb and Jackson; one sister Marlene Ott, Salem, OR; and a host of family and friends.
