Margaret Aleeta (Hough) Burtin, born June 4, 1929 and passed away November 28, 2017. Margaret was born the second child to Walter Merrill Hough and Bessie E. (Webb) Hough. Margaret’s siblings were Merrill (Junior), Johnny and Mary (Mott) Hough.
Margaret as a teenager worked at Star Theatre and Kinnoles Studios. She was a graduate from Lebanon High School, class of 1947-1948, then she met and fell in love with her future husband, A. Wayne Burtin. They were united in marriage on August 20, 1949. Shortly after they wed, Wayne was inducted in the U.S. Marine Corps and he left for Camp Pendleton, CA. Margaret and her mother and father in laws soon followed him to California and resided there during basic training and afterwards they returned to Lebanon, MO. Shortly after Wayne left for Korea aboard a ship. After six months in Japan, Wayne returned to Lebanon and drove for Empire Gas. In November of 1958, a daughter, Sandra was born. They moved to Joplin for a couple of years then moved to Bennett Springs State Park where Margaret and Wayne shared the duties of running Burtin’s Resort, with Wayne’s parents, Hobert and Nellie Burtin. On December 20, 1966 a son Steve Houston Burtin was born and came home on Christmas Eve. What a special gift to put under the Christmas tree.
The resort was a busy time for Margaret cleaning rooms at the resort, canoes, john boats, motorcycles and bicycles, doing some good trout fishing and eating and attending Church of God in Bennett Springs. In 1969 the family moved to Springfield and dad went to work for Beaufort Transfer and mom took care of the home making and all that intales with raising Sandra and Steve. At this time, they bought their first home on Crabapple Lane and in 1971 they bought their second home on Canterbury Lane. Mom and dad took us on many family vacations. Disney World, Old Faithful in Winnabaro, to the beach in Galveston, Texas, LBJ Space Center in Houston, visiting mom’s little sister, Mary and her family, Pikes Peak and the Royal Gorge with Dr. Jim and Jolee and Debbie for many fun times to name a few.
For many years mom and dad rode their Goldwing from Key West, FL to Mount St. Helene and every state in between, including Niagara Falls in New York and Canada. They enjoyed riding with several other friends. They rode with the Retreads Group and the Gold-Wing Road Riders Association. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary together with family and friends at Walnut Lawn Church of God, their home church. Mom cared for dad the last 4 years he was with us, until he lost his fight on November 20, 2000. For the past 17 years, mom has been the Matriarch of our family.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, 2 brothers, 1 sister and their spouses, several nieces, nephews, her in-laws, her husband of 53 years, several nieces and nephews and many friends. Margaret is survived by her daughter Sandra Burtin of Springfield, her son Steve and wife Sandy Burtin of Nixa, five grandchildren, Nataschia Gregory, Kristin Barton, Charles Gregory and wife Christine, Rachele Rabe and husband Scott and Steven Burtin, great-grandchildren Michael Perkins, Dustin Barton, Claytin Barton, Bailey Amman, Aleeta Gregory and Gayvn Bennett, many nieces and nephews and a host of friends and extended family. She lived a long rich life and fought the good fight, now she has her reward. She had the faith of a mustard seed. The way is narrow and difficult, but the reward is beyond your greatest expections.
