Obituary for Jeannie Marie Rhoads (Murray)

Jeannie Marie  Rhoads (Murray)
Jeannie Marie Murray Rhoads passed away Friday, August 4th, 2017 due to injuries sustained in a car accident. She was born October 10, 1947, the first of four children born to Max and Ella Sue Murray. Jeannie was the apple of her Daddy's eye.

Jeannie began school at Glidewell, where she soon became known for two things: a fierce determination to watch out for her three younger brothers, and her nickname, "Bean" as in beanpole.

In high school, she caught the eye of her bus driver, Mike Rhoads, who was nearly four years her senior. He won her affection at age sixteen, but the pair had to include Jeannie's three brothers on every date (at her father's insistence). The two were married when Jeannie was seventeen in Blue Springs, MO. just a few months before Mike had to leave to serve in the Army. The couple was rarely ever seen apart, during their 50+ years of marriage

During Jeannie's adult life, she defined herself as a woman who served others. She was a teacher at heart, taught the four and five year old class at Glidewell Baptist for 46 years as well as the youth for a while. She also played the organ in the church for over 40 years.

Together, Mike and Jeannie started the Dairy Queen restaurant on West Kearney, where they dedicated 27 years to ensuring everyone they knew could count on a solid job in a caring environment. Jeannie was a positive role model to all their employees. She considered them "Family". Jeannie never met anyone she could not love and influenced countless people, thanks to a driving desire to do what was right and a love that extended far beyond herself.

Jeannie's four grandchildren were the joy of her life. She treasured the memories of so many fun times and the sound of their laughter.

Jeannie was preceded in death by by her father, Max Murray Sr. She is survived by her mother, Ella Sue Murray (her lifelong best friend), her husband, Mike Rhoads;
two children, Susan Bensman (fiance' Bill Bailey), and Murray Rhoads; four grandchildren, Mikie Nivens (husband Nick), Garrett Rhoads, Miranda Holle (husband Gavin), and Cole Rhoads. Also surviving are her three brothers; Mark Murray and his wife Rose, Gordon Murray and his wife Karen, and Max Murray, Jr. and his wife Julie, and sister-in-laws, Mary Phroper (husband Ronnie) and Rita Rhoads.

Funeral services will be at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, August 19, 2017 at Greenlawn Funeral Home East. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. before services, at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions maybe made to Glidewell Baptist Church African Mission Trip or the Food Pantry.
