Obituary for Ruth Mae Jones (Burk)

Ruth Mae Jones (Burk)
Ruth Mae Jones, 98, began life in Vernon, Colorado in 1919. From there, as a girl, she spent time living in a sod house in rural Wyoming. Her father’s interest in fishing led the family to Ava, Missouri where the electricity was provided by a water wheel. At the age of 20 she used the money she earned gathering walnuts to move to Seattle, Washington and later Long Beach, California to aid the war effort as a true “Rosie the Riveter”. Ruth worked on the wings on the B17 Flying Fortress, and witnessed the flight of Howard Hughes’ “Spruce Goose”. Along with countless others, she came from humble beginnings to aid her country in a time of great peril.
She married Harry Lee Jones in 1944, settled in Independence, and later Springfield, Missouri and together they were parents to six children. Their marriage endured more than 61 years, until Harry’s death in 2005.
From a young age, sewing was a major part of Ruth’s life. She gave up schooling after the eighth grade to help her family while her mother was ailing. What began as a way to help her mother mend clothes became both Ruth’s profession and passion. She was largely self-taught, and took on ambitious quilt patterns that required great skill and attention to detail. Ruth designed and created unique, quilted handbags that were immensely popular at local craft shows.
Ruth died on July 17, 2017; a member of the generation we call “The Greatest”. She was predeceased by her parents Eva and Leonard Burk, brother Bill and his wife Muriel, husband Harry, and son Tom. She is survived by her brother Bob and his wife Patricia; her children Richard, Bob, Phil, Kenny, and Nancy Jones; her daughters-in law Vonna, Debbie, and Janet; eight grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.
The visitation will be held at 11:00AM Thursday, July 20, 2017, at Greenlawn Funeral Home North with burial to follow at 1:00PM at Greenlawn Cemetery.
