Obituary for Coy F. Duncan

Coy F. Duncan
Coy Fae Duncan passed away on Wednesday, March 28th, with his family by his side. He was 91 years old.
On September 20th, 1926, Coy was born to Esther and Willie Duncan in Marsena, Arkansas. He grew up helping on his family’s farm growing cotton and raising cattle, climbing trees, and‘coon hunting. When he was 21 years old, on April 24th, 1948, he married Dorma Lea Sarratt. Together they had 4 children, 5 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren.
Coy and his family moved from Arkansas to Springfield in 1954. In Springfield, Coy worked at Custom Trailers for over 30 years. Coy was an elder at Johnston & Dale Church of Christ, and later was a member of Kansas Expressway Church of Christ. Coy would end his evenings in his easy chair reading from his Bible.
Gardening was one of Coy’s greatest passions. Anyone who lived nearby remembers the big, beautiful garden Coy would plant every year. He grew just about every vegetable you could imagine, in addition to peanuts, grapes, strawberries, blackberries, apple trees, peach trees, and plum trees. Gardening was his first priority, but after that was taken care of he would work on the rest of his small farm. He learned resourcefulness at a young age and could mend anything with bailing wire or twine. His son still frequently finds pieces of bailing wire or twine around the farm, patching something together. Coy spent the rest of his time tending to his honeybees, taking care of his cows (even naming them), hunting for mushrooms, or going to Bluegrass festivals. Coy was also an avid ‘coon hunter. He had many ‘coon dogs over the years that he took hunting with his sons, grandsons, and his brother. If there is one thing we could all learn from Coy it would be how to be content. Coy didn’t need to leave his home and small farm to find happiness; he found it right where he was.
Coy is preceded in death by his wife, Dorma Lea Duncan, his son Quentin Duncan, his daughter Judy (Duncan) Heavin, his granddaughter Summer (Duncan) Ewing, his parents Esther & Willie Duncan, his sisters Willie Mae Cossey & Donnie Hamilton, and his brother Earl Duncan.
Coy is survived by his two sons and their wives, Coy L. and Cheryl Duncan, and Gary and Brinda Duncan, his son-in-law Bill Heavin, his brother and sister-in-law, Verl and Karen Duncan, four grandchildren and their spouses, Kevin and Samantha Heavin, Andrew and Stephanie Heavin, Holly and Bryan Whisler, and Travis and Taylor Duncan, nine great grandchildren, Jessa, Micah, Tomas, Nolan, Eli, Grace, Emmitt, Ila, and Beau, and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Ash Grove Healthcare for the love and excellent care they gave to Coy for the last 8 years of his life while he battled Alzheimer’s disease.

“And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive
the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.” – Colossians 3:23-24
