Obituary for Wilma Jean Raper (Mason)
Wilma Jean Mason Raper, 90, of Springfield, died peacefully on Sunday, November 12, 2017. Wilma was born on February 16, 1927, in the hills of the Ozark Mountains of Taney County, Missouri. Born the youngest of eight children, at the beginning of the Great Depression, Wilma—known to her brothers as “Billie”—was a child of humble beginnings. She spent her life as a hardworking woman, taking pride in keeping an impeccably clean home, a thriving garden, and working a full-time job at, first, a garment factory and, later, General Electric. In her eyes, there was always work to be done. She lived in Southwest Missouri most of her life, enjoyed music, and rumor has it she once compelled her son, as a child, to attend square dancing lessons with her, complete with matching outfits. She took care to ensure her hair was always neatly coiffed and her lipstick applied, and she had an infectious giggle to rival any other grandmother. She is survived by her son, Brad Stokes, and his wife, Carmen; a stepdaughter, Donna Freeman, and her husband, Butch; a granddaughter, Andrea Stokes; five step-grandchildren, Shelly Freeman Wears, James Bradley Raper, Missy Raper, Sarah Freeman Odom, and Charlie Raper II; great-grandchildren; extended family and friends. Wilma was preceded in death by her husband, James, her parents, her siblings, a stepson, and a granddaughter. Services will be held at 2:00pm, Thursday, November 16, 2017, at Greenlawn Funeral Home North. The family would like to thank Cassandra Patrom, Donna Bilyeu, and the staff of Oxford Home Health for the love, care, and support they gave Wilma at the end of her life.
