Thaddeus Carway Jackson, 86, Springfield, Mo. passed away on September 3, 2017, after a short illness. He was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, on August 5, 1931, to Fred and Lillian (Epps) Jackson. Thaddeus retired from Hiland Dairy after 38 years, as a truck driver. He was a U.S. Army Korean War veteran, where he witnessed the first test-firing of an atomic shell from the Army's giant cannon at Camp Dessert Rock, Nev. May 25, 1952. He was one of the nearly 3,000 officers and enlisted men, most of them artillerymen, who crouched behind revetments 4,500 yards from ground zero as scientists fired the huge 280 mm artillery piece by electrical control from a tower ten miles away.Before the actual firing of the atomic shell, the group was thoroughly indoctrinated in atomic warfare techniques and took part in experimental firing of conventional, non atomic projectiles from the mammoth Cannon. Corporal Jackson was a gunner in Battery D of the 66 th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Gun Battalion, stationed in New York City. He accepted Jesus as his savior at a young age, He was of the Assembly of God faith and he had attended the same church for 40 plus years. He loved hunting, fishing, and camping with his family and friends.
Thaddeus was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers, and two sisters. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Geraldine Jackson, a daughter,Thadine Hartley and her husband, Michael, two sons; Steve Jackson and his wife Donna, and Andrew Jackson and his wife Candace, six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one sister, Judy Bowman and her husband Bo, and a sister-in-law: Marie greer and her husband Charlie. He will also be missed by several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be at 1:00 p.m.Thursday, September 7, 2017, in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. No visitation is planned.
