Obituary for Norman Richard Youngberg

Norman Richard  Youngberg
Norman Richard Youngberg, 78, Springfield, Missouri departed this life Sunday, July 2, 2017.
He was born August 28, 1938 at Chanute, Kansas to Ruel Raymond Elmer and Viola Ruth (Rensing) Youngberg.
Norman graduated from Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He worked for the DuPont Company for 10 years in Topeka, Kansas and later in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, later purchasing a manufacturing business in Miami, Oklahoma, operating it for thirty years until retirement on June 1, 2000.
He enjoyed local sporting activities, target shooting at Bass Pro and his neighbors. He especially enjoyed cycling on Oklahoma Freewheel, completing his first one in 1997, making many friends along the way.
Norman was active in his church, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, Springfield, Missouri, supporting scholarship funds at Springfield Catholic High School and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton School.
He was a Paul Harris Fellow with Rotary International, serving as President and was also a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason.
He always enjoyed the Missouri Institute of Natural Science Museum, located on the edge of Rivercut. Among his accomplishments and with his support along with the C.W. Titus Foundation, a very nice wing was added to the Museum.
Norman was an exceptional woodworker, making many grandfather clocks for his beloved family and he enjoyed working on his cars and restoring John Deere two-cylinder tractors.
He and his wife Shirley has visited most of the United States, including Alaska and have been to Europe three times. Norman was in a group of twelve drivers for a “Journey to the End of the World” with Land Rover to demonstrate the vehicle’s ability to handle challenging terrain from parts of Argentina, across the Andes Mountains, in and out of Chile, through the Patagonia of Ushuaia from the tip of South America, above Cape Horn.
In October 2006 at age 68, he traveled to Nepal and climbed to Mount Everest Base Camp.
He loved his family and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Norman was preceded in death by his parents and two infant children, Kelly and Gary.
Survivors include his beloved wife Shirley Ray Youngberg of the home, two sons; Richard Youngberg and wife Lorraine of Gurnee, Illinois, and Patrick Youngberg of Miami, Oklahoma, one daughter; Parmalee Engle and husband Russell of Wichita, Kansas, four step children; Chris D. Gilstrap and wife Denise of Coralville, Iowa, Kimberly D. Gilstrap of Iowa City, Iowa, Michael C. Gilstrap of Jensen Beach, Florida and Valerie Robertson and husband Ryan of Washington D.C., one brother; Bill Youngberg and wife Patty of Springfield, one sister; Sharon Kiesel of Springfield, Missouri. He and Shirley together have 14 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his beloved dog Mitzi of the home.
The family will receive friends Sunday, July 9, 2017 from 2:00-4:00 PM at Greenlawn Funeral Home East, 3540 E. Seminole, Springfield, Missouri with rosary and prayer services beginning at 4:00 PM.
Funeral Mass will be conducted at 10:00 AM Monday, July 10, 2017 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 2200 W. Republic Road, Springfield, Missouri with Reverend Thomas E. Reidy officiating.
Burial will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Chanute, Kansas.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, Catholic School and/or the Building Fund or to the St. Patrick Cemetery, Chanute, Kansas in his memory.
