Obituary for Sally Kay Rice

Sally Kay Rice
Sally Kay Rice was born on November 8, 1941 in Springfield, Missouri to Stanley and Helen
Reynolds.

She was the first of five children to this union which later included brothers Jack, John, Jerry and sister Susan. Sally was definitely a Daddy's Girl and enjoyed the privilege of riding the bus
downtown to pay bills for the family. In high school Sally was a Kiltie and was proud to show
her support for her school by marching and playing a drum. This was no small accomplishment
for Sally as she was dealing with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. Sally was part of Central High
School's class of 1959 as was the love of her life Ronald Gene Rice.

On September 1, 1962 Sally and Ron were married. While Ron attended college to become a
Licensed Psychologist, PhD Sally was a house mother to a group of male college students and
Ron preached at a small country church. In 1964, Sally gave birth to Shawn Rice in Columbia,
Missouri and in 1966 Timothy joined the family. Sally has lived in Springfield, Missouri,
Columbia, Missouri, Florida, New Orleans and Wichita, Kansas. In 1975 Ron was diagnosed
with cancer and encouraged by Ron, Sally acquired her college degree in Dietetics with a
specialty in diabetes. Ron predeceased Sally June 29, 1985 in Springfield, MO.

Sally enjoyed cooking and relationships with people. She never met a stranger and was quite
accomplished in dietetics and food. While working at St. John's Hospital in Springfield,
Missouri, Sally was one of three people who worked to set up and implement the point system
that diabetics use to control and monitor their diabetes. This system is still in use today. Sally
could look at a list of ingredients and write down the recipe measure for measure of each
ingredient. She also made the best mashed potatoes for family gatherings on the holidays. Due to the rheumatoid arthritis, Sally would take care of business over the telephone and talking with her daily on the telephone was not uncommon.

Sally genuinely cared for people and anyone in need was never turned away empty handed. Sally lived out her religious faith and would do anything she could to help others. Her door was always open to anyone and everyone. Sally had the "gift of gab" and became fast friends with all those she met.

Services for Sally will be at 11:00 am Monday, July 3, 2017 at Greenlawn Funeral Home East with visitation from 10:00 to 11:00 am prior to the service. Interment will follow in Hazelwood Cemetery.
